whether you’re on the train going to work, chilling outside in the garden or simply doing some housework, podcasts are amazing and I honestly never thought I’d be a listener.
As a kid, I didn’t understand why some radio stations had no music just interviewing and speaking about various topics.
Fast forward about 10 years and I love podcasts because although they are entertaining, they don’t take away any productivity. I can watch Youtube sometimes and suddenly I’m swept into the black hole of Youtube and before I know it I’ve spent 2 hours watching video upon video and I haven’t got a thing done!
If your like me and you can’t work in silence which, I definitely cannot work in silence unless I’m outdoors but then it’s never 100% silent but anyway, I have really enjoyed tuning into a podcast while I’m sorting out the wardrobe, tidying my dressing table or even doing dinner and I can listen in on some really cool conversations, I even listen to them in bed or the bath sometimes while I’m winding down and its like you’ve just been uplifted by an old friend.
Here I am going to share with you my most beloved podcasts to date!
Estee Lalonde – The Heart of It
Ah, I was sooo late to the party with this babe! I was waiting for a therapy session weirdly enough and as I was searching through wellness books in WHSmith, I came across Estee’s book Bloom. I opened it up and inside was a little post-it note and inside was a little quote written in there which my nan used to say, I quickly tweeted Estee and asked if this is in every book because it was just too weird and she said no but she’s all for it! I know it probably wasn’t but it felt like fate to me so I purchased the book right away and it helped me at one of my most anxious points.
This then leads me to her podcast. I went through a phase of not being able to sleep at night due to some family issues and this was the only thing that would make me switch off and think about good things, she covers every topic you would want her too as a woman and every single person has opened my mind a little bit more each time and are honestly incredible women, she touches on feminism, strength, travel, mothers, identity and makeup.
My favourite episodes: I think my faves were strength, travel and identity I have actually listened to these podcasts multiple times which. Estee has the most soothing voice and her guests are just amazing people I would totally recommend this to anybody!
Giovanna Fletcher – Happy Mum Happy Baby
Okay, this is kind of an odd choice because I didn’t read her book Happy Mum Happy Baby (I have read her novels though and they are amazing, Some Kind of Wonderful is my fave!) and it’s also a weird choice because of the fact I am not a mother I mean, I have a Pug but I don’t have any human children so technically this isn’t aimed at me at all but I am totally obsessed with it! It’s now on to its 2nd series and I am loving it so far!
I have 2 nephews and 2 nieces (and 2 more nephews on the way!) I am super close to them and most of them pretty much live at my house haha! I definitely want kids in the future and if I am lucky enough to have my own then this podcast is amazing for that, it preps you and it’s honest without scaring or putting you off, I think this can help new mums especially and also if your around someone that’s going to become a mum in the near future, I have laughed and cried at this podcast and it is honestly amazing! Don’t put it off just because you don’t have kids it’s honestly hilarious and so sweet!
My top 3 episodes: This is so hard honestly Season 2 but if I had to choose 3 solid favourites it would have to be, Davina Mcall because she seems so headstrong and has really conquered some demons that I had no idea about and I think she’s amazing at parenting and was full of really good advice, my other favourite has to be the podcast with Elle Wright and Michelle Cottle because they have such heartbreaking stories and they speak about their baby losses and I was crying throughout honestly they both have blogs ‘feathering the empty nest’ and ‘Dear Orla’ which I now follow both, they do so much for childrens charities and baby loss charities which you can find on their blogs and lastly, in the first series Giovanna did a podcast with her husband Tom Fletcher and I found it so hilarious and honest and I loved hearing their views on parenthood together, it was really sweet.
Fearne Cotton – Happy Living
I am such a huge fan of Fearne Cotton and I have been for years, she was the face of weekend TV when I was growing up she was always such a cool chick and I have loved everything she has done ever since, I always loved listening to her on the radio so knowing she had a podcast was a no-brainer and although I am maybe slightly biassed this podcast is amazing! It’s all about mental health and wellbeing and Fearne speaks to others about their life stories and what they have overcome. The first episode was amazing Fearne spoke to Tom Daly and his husband on the news of them expanding their family through a surrogate (It’s SO cute, congrats to them!) and the 2nd episode was with Dawn French and I love Dawn! I love hearing things I never knew before and I actually related to a lot of it. It’s such a nice uplifting podcast and by listening to the podcast it eases my anxiety and makes me feel super happy it’s not like the usual interview it’s super relaxed and friendly, I like that.
My top 3 episodes: Dawn French obv! I loved her stories about her adoption process and how she moved to New York and London she’s quite an inspirational woman. I also loved the podcast with Matt Haig, he wrote the book ‘Reasons To Stay Alive’ and he talks about his life-changing panic attack and I had no idea of his story, to be honest, he truly is inspiring. Finally, the most recent one which was only posted last Monday Fearne visited Stephen Fry and he talks about his part in ‘Mind’ charity and the issues he has had to deal with and he explains so intelligently how us humans are programmed to recognise faces etc and how sometimes social media can make us forget sometimes.
Ingrid Nilson & Cat Valdes – Ladies Who Lunch
I am so late to this podcast, I listened to one a month or so ago and I have actually started the entire podcast from the beginning. It’s like having two big sisters chatting away in your ear, they are super uplifting and I feel like its such a motivating podcast especially for fellow women! They discuss everything you wouldn’t normally hear in a topic of conversation, relationships, sexuality, introverts, extroverts, jealousy literally everything.
My top 3 episodes: I’m not up to date (there are so many!) and I started from the beginning but I have watched almost all od them. I did love the ‘Our obsession with celebrities’ episode talking about how and why our society nowadays is almost fame and celebrity obsessed and how the definition of celebrity has changed meaning over the years.
‘How we stay informed without losing our minds’ is also a favourite of mine, how to get through life with all the information we have nowadays, politics, anxiety etc the girls have completely different ways of doing this and I must say it’s something I always
Lastly, probably my most favourite podcast so far ‘Mistakes we’ve made in our careers’ This particular podcast really stuck out to me and I found this the most relatable, while they are crunching on weird pumpkin flavoured crisps or ‘chips’ as they say, they speak about the mistakes they made during their careers hence the title. This really helped me because Youtube is definitely a platform I want to work at eventually and it gave me a little insight of what maybe I would end up regretting if I posted too much of my relationships etc and I took note of a lot of things in this podcast.
Those are my 4 podcasts I have loved listening to I listen to them on train journeys, in bed and in the bath too. They relax me and I much prefer listening to these kind of podcasts when I need to relax and I often choose a podcast over music now, they are so easy to listen to especially if you have an iphone and you already have the podcast app.
