Mindfulness and self-care is such an easy way for us to bloom into our best selves. Practising self-care daily helps to improve our immunity, increase our positive thoughts and lessens stress, anxiety and depression. It also not only helps us but lets up help others too.
Self-care is basically having your mental and physical health the main priority and saying that out loud makes me completely baffled as to why it’s not a priority to everyone, it really is important. Everybody does some sort of basic self-care even if that’s having breakfast or brushing your teeth. The things I really try to think about the most for myself is the type of stuff I’m consuming and how often, I wouldn’t dream of smoking or putting anything toxic in my body, I do like the odd gin here and there but I really think it’s important to look after your body and treat it well in order to look after yourself but self-care doesn’t stop at what you put in your body (although its a good start) it has so many variations too.
The best thing to do with your emotional well being is to simply, go with it, feel every emotion when you feel them and face them you will actually help your stress levels. It is so tempting to push your feelings aside or try and distract yourself but it will help you in the long run if you feel them and move on. However, you feel doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good or bad but it’s how you deal with them and respond which has repercussions. Emotional self-care can be in the form of a journal by writing your honest feelings into a journal, by singing your favourite songs, crying when you need to or venting to someone you trust.
I know the word ‘spiritual’ makes some people want to roll their eyes, you don’t have to be into crystals or be religious. Spiritual self-care is about your moral compass, your values and what really matters to you. If you suffer from depression, if you develop a sense of true being and purpose that actually helps in recovery you can help yourself by removing negative or toxic energy from your life and also trying meditation. Try making a daily list of things you’re grateful for or things you love and that make you feel amazing, then make it a priority to bring these into your life.
If I workout regularly I see a huge difference in my mindset, it helps my body physically but it really does help me let off steam and makes me feel less anxious so it works overall physically and mentally. You should do whatever feels best for you, my favourites for my mindset are Yoga and HIIT sessions I find Yoga helps me to concentrate on my balancing and my breathing so I’m not thinking of anything except those two things and HIIT sessions challenge me and help me push myself again it is such a good distraction to the little mind chatter I have all the time.
Social self-care is important to us all, even if you would prefer a night in compared to a night out it still makes us feel good when we are social and sharing stories and supporting each other making us feel part of something and less lonely and isolated. I also think about who I have in my support system, I recently read that building a network of supportive friends (or family members) helps you to take care of yourself in a huge way. I try not to lean on people too much and if you find yourself doing that then you can always seek professional help, I personally see therapy the exact same as I see a dentist or doctors check-up, it’s just another way of keeping another body part functioning and in a healthy condition, our brains control everything so why not keep it in tip-top condition? it actually seems kinda irresponsible not to.
